Abstract
Germanium values are recovered from gas liquors by adding an aldehyde, preferably formaldehyde, to produce a precipitate, which is recovered and treated to extract the germanium, for example by burning it to form an ash, which may then be distilled with hydrochloric acid to form germanium tetrachloride. The gas liquor may, prior to the aldehyde addition, be partially dephenolated, for example with an organic solvent such as butyl acetate, and may be acidified, preferably to a pH of 2 to 3. The aldehyde addition preferably is effected at an elevated temperature, more particularly at the boiling point of the liquor.
