Abstract

A substantially dry ore containing a mineral oxide is subjected at an elevated temperature to a gaseous sulphiding agent to convert the oxide to the sulphide and the latter separated from the gangue by froth flotation. The sulphiding gas may be hydrogen sulphide or the vapour of carbon disulphide and the operation may be performed in an oxygen free or a reducing atmosphere in a rotating cylinder furnace at a temperature above 200 DEG F but below the melting point of the sulphide formed. By sulphiding at two different temperatures two different metal sulphides may be obtained from an oxide ore containing both. Any known sulphide flotation reagent may be used. The oxide ores which may be treated are tin, tungsten, vanadium, uranium, or molybdenum, mixed oxides of tin and tungsten, and chemically combined oxides of vanadium and uranium. Specification 26019/09, [Class 82(i)], is referred to.
