Abstract
Tungsten and/or other hard metal carbides are recovered from sintered hard metal scrap by heating the scrap to between 1500 DEG and 1650 DEG C., cooling and dissolving out the binding metal with hydrochloric, sulphuric or oxalic acid. In a modification, lower temperatures (1400-1500 DEG C.) may be employed by heating the scrap metal in the presence of one or more of the elements, sulphur, phosphorus, arsenic, selenium, nitrogen and hydrogen. Specification 606,117 is referred to. The Provisional Specification describes also heating the hard metal scrap to between 1500 DEG and 2200 DEG C.
