Abstract

926,210. Arc-rupturing in switches. A. REYROLLE & CO. Ltd. Sept. 29, 1961, No. 35300/61. Class 38 (5). In an arc-chute comprising a plurality of narrow cells each containing divergent arc runners 34, 35, magnetic elements 30 comprising generally U-shaped or V-shaped arches of magnetic material are arranged in register with one another around the edges of registering apertures in the walls 14 of the cells to form a tunnel in which the arc is initially drawn, the current paths through conducting bridges 33 between adjacent arc runners being linked with the flux paths through the magnetic elements 30. In the arrangement shown, the adjacent arc runners 34, 35, the associated magnetic elements 30 and conducting bridges 33 are formed from a single stamping of magnetic material or are formed in a single piece by machining a block of magnetic material. Alternatively, each element 30 may be formed from magnetic material and the associated arc runners 34, 35 may be formed from a strip of good conducting material bent around the apex of the element 30 and riveted thereto. In each case insulation is provided to ensure that the arc roots on the runners and not on the magnetic arches.
