Abstract

926,173. Aerials. G. S. V. (MARINE & COMMERCIAL) Ltd. Nov. 2, 1959 [Aug. 1, 1958], No. 24947/58. Class 40 (7). A radio aerial suitable for use on the roofs of railway carriages comprises a planar conductive framework having a closed outer periphery and supported generally parallel to an earth plane. The feeder is connected between the framework and the earth plane. In a simple embodiment, the framework consists of a metal ring 10 mounted horizontally above the metal roof (or a metal plate on the roof) of railway carriage 11. The ring is made approximately #/II in diameter where # is the operating wavelength and it is supported by and connected to the inner conductor of a coaxial feeder at 12. The outer conductor of the feeder is coupled to the earth plane. At a point diametrically opposite the point 12, the ring may be further supported by a metal post connecting the ring and earth plane. The conductive framework may be elliptical or multi-sided. It can also be in the form of a wheel with a plurality of spokes, the central conductor of the feeder being connected at the centre (or hub) of the wheel.
