Abstract

1359981 Aerials UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION 12 Jan 1973 [8 Feb 1972] 1754/73 Heading H4A A rooftop aerial 12 for a railway or road vehicle is shaped in the form of a rectangle with long sides A and two shorter sides B, C. The side B connects together two adjacent ends of the sides A, and the side C extends from one of the other ends of the sides A to within a distance E of the other one 30 of said ends. A stud D from the end of the side C extends parallel to the adjacent side A, and is connected thereto by a perpendicularly disposed shorting stub F, which completes the loop. The aerial 12 is mounted horizontally on insulating supports above the metal roof of the vehicle, which serves as a ground plane. The inner conductor of a co-axial cable is connected to the end 30 of the aerial, and its outer conductor is connected to the roof of the vehicle. The coaxial cable may be connected at its other end to the output side of a line tuner, which is connected by another coaxial cable to a radio transmitter (Fig. 1, not shown). The aerial may be made from stainless steel tubing and the supporting structure from polyvinyl chloride. The supporting structure may be hinged, as shown in Fig. 4, so that the aerial may be raised and lowered, for example, by air under pressure from the vehicle braking system.
