Abstract
925,653. Casting processes. FIRTH STERLING Inc. Dec. 7, 1960 [Dec. 10, 1959], No. 42198/60. Class 83 (1). In a consumable-electrode casting process, a relative movement of the molten metal with respect to the electrode is imparted by rotation of the mould at a speed below that which would have an effective centrifugal effect on the melt. A result of such rotation is a slight relative movement of the pool with respect to the solidified metal due to the inertia of the melt and the presence of the electrode, which movement is stated to produce a uniformly fine grain structure throughout the ingot. The fluid-cooled mould A is mounted for rotation on an arm 21 so that it may be swung from beneath one electrode 10 to another replacement 10<SP>1</SP>. The connection of the rotating mould to the electricity conductor 37 is achieved through mercury in a trough 48 into which a flange 50a on the rotating mould table B dips. The mercury is cooled by coolant 52 in an outer trough 48b. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 872,243.
