Abstract
PURPOSE: To cast an electrode simply and in high yield in the manufacture of the consumable electrode for electroslag remelting, by inclining the casting mold at a specific angle to the horizontal, and by casting the molten metal of electrode material while oscillating or slowly rotating the casting mold.
CONSTITUTION: In casting a consumable electrode for electroslag remelting or vacuum arc remelting having ≥4 length L/diameter D ratio, a casting mold 1 is inclined at 10W45° angle α to the horizontal. The internal surface of the casting mold 1 has draft angle and is applied with facing material, and the cover 3 which forms a pouring opening 2 for molten metal is lined with insulating material 7. The casting mold 1 is supported at its outside with supporting rollers 4 and driving rollers 5. Molten metal of electrode material is poured from a ladle 8 while oscillating or rotating slowly the casting mold. Head effect produced by the inclination of the casting mold allows to manufacture a consumable electrode having no shrinkage cavities or surface defects, in addition, the service life of the casting mold is lengthened.
