Abstract

Alkyl pyridines are obtained by heating together a mixture of methacrolein, acetaldehyde and ammonia. The process is preferably carried out at a temperature of 300-450 DEG C. in the presence of a condensation catalyst. The preferred catalyst is silica or alumina or a mixture of these and may contain in addition titania, zirconia, ceria or thoria and may also contain zinc, tin, lead, tungsten, nickel, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, iron, copper, palladium or silver or a compound thereof. In an example methacrolein, acetaldehyde and ammonia are heated in the presence of a catalyst consisting of silica, alumina and lead fluoride to give a mixture of b -picoline and 3,5-lutidine.
