Abstract

Catalysts for the synthesis of pyridine bases comprise silica, alumina or mixtures of these. Preferably the catalysts also contain titania, zirconia, ceria or thoria and may also contain zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, tungsten, nickel, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, iron, copper, palladium or silver or a compound thereof. In the examples pyridines bases are synthesized from acrolein, ammonia and a saturated ketone using as catalyst (a) a mixture of silica and alumina impregnated with lead fluoride and (b) a mixture of silica and alumina.ALSO:Pyridine bases (pyridine and alkyl pyridines) are obtained by heating together a mixture of acrolein, ammonia and a saturated aliphatic ketone having at least one methyl group adjacent to the carbonyl group. The process is preferably carried out at 300-550 DEG C. in the presence of a condensation catalyst. The preferred catalysts are silica, alumina or mixtures of these which may contain titania, zirconia, ceria or thoria and certain other metals or metal compounds. Suitable ketones are, for example, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, diethyl ketone and methyl isopropyl ketone. Among the products specified are pyridine, a -picoline, b -picoline, 2,4,6-collidine, 2,6-lutidine, 2-ethyl pyridine and 2-ethyl-3-methyl pyridine.
