Abstract
Catalysts for use in the production of b -picoline by heating a mixture of propionaldehyde, acrolein and ammonia comprise alumina, silica or a mixture of these. In addition the catalyst may contain titania, zirconia, ceria or thoria and also a modifier or promoter, for example, zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, tungsten, nickel, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, iron, copper, palladium or silver or a compound thereof.ALSO:b -Picoline is produced by heating a mixture of propionaldehyde, acrolein and ammonia. If desired, an inert diluent such as steam, nitrogen or benzene, may be present in the reaction mixture. The preferred reaction temperatures are in the range 300 DEG C. to 600 DEG C. The process is preferably carried out in the presence, as catalyst, of alumina, silica or a mixture of these. The catalyst may also contain titania, zirconia, ceria or thoria. In addition the catalyst may contain a metal or metal compound as a modifier or promoter, e.g. zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, tungsten, nickel, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, iron, copper, palladium or silver, or a compound thereof.
