Abstract

Catalysts for the preparation of a - and g -picolines by heating ammonia and acetaldehyde vapours, consists of alumina or alumina and silica with one or more of the following metals, zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, tungsten, nickel, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, iron, copper, palladium and silver and compounds thereof. In the silica-alumina composition a 5 to 50% by weight of alumina is preferred and the catalyst is prepared by steeping the mixture or alumina in a salt and drying, and is used directly, or after conversion by heat to the oxide or metal, or after double decomposition to the required insoluble salt which is purified from the soluble salt and dried by heating. Examples describe the preparation of sodium tungstate, molybdic, cobalt, nickel, zinc, cadmium, stannic, and lead oxides, and zinc and lead fluorides, chlorides and sulphates.ALSO:a - and g -picolines are prepared by heating ammonia and acetaldehyde vapours in contact with a catalyst consisting of alumina, or alumina and silica with one or more of the following metals, zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, tungsten, nickel, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, iron, copper, palladium, and silver or compounds thereof and in the absence of substantial quantities of water vapour. A temperature of from 350 DEG to 550 DEG C. is preferred for the reaction and the vapours are preferably introduced separately into the reactor in a ratio of for example from 0.4:1 to 1:1. Paraldehyde and metaldehyde may be the aldehyde source.
