Abstract

N-Alkylpiperidines alone or mixed with piperidine are dehydrogenated by passing them with hydrogen over a dehydrogenation catalyst consisting of a platinum metal at elevated temperatures. The products are pyridine with some alkyl pyridines. To increase the yield of pyridine at least 7 times the molar quantity of hydrogen based on piperidines should be used. The preferred catalyst is platinum or palladium supported on silica gel and the preferred temperature range for carrying out the process is 300-450 DEG C. Specification 744,928 is referred to.
