Abstract

Vinyl-substituted pyridines are prepared by mixing aqueous formaldehyde solution with an excess of an a -or g -methyl pyridine, heating the mixture to at least 150 DEG C. at superatmospheric pressure, heating the whole of the resulting mixture in the presence of activated alumina as catalyst, and recovering the resulting vinyl pyridine. The preferred temperatures are 180 DEG -250 DEG C. for the first step, and 200 DEG -500 DEG C. for the second. The starting methyl pyridines may also contain other substituents. Hydroxyethyl pyridines are formed intermediately. The Provisional Specification is not restricted to the use of activated alumina as catalyst.
