Yohimbine, alloyohimbine and corynanthine are isomerised by reaction with an alkali metal tertiary alcoholate in solution in an inert solvent, thereby effecting selective orientation of the C16 and C17 substituents and yielding respectively b -yohimbine, a -yohimbine and b -yohimbine. The process may be carried out simultaneously with other reactions, e.g. oxidation, and an example details the simultaneous isomerisation and Oppenauer oxidation of corynanthine to yohimbinone.
