Abstract

6-Methyl-3-oxo-D 4,6-steroids having in rings A and B the structure: <FORM:0957222/C2/1> are prepared by contacting the corresponding 6-methylene-3-oxo-D 4-steroids with an activated palladium, platinum, rhodium, ruthenium, osmium, iridium or nickel catalyst in a solvent in the presence of a weakly basic buffering salt. The starting materials may be those 6-methyl-3-oxo-D 4,6-steroids described in Specifications 929,985 and 944,050. Examples are given. 16a , 17a -Cyclomethylene-6-methylenepregna-4, 6-diene-3, 20-dione is prepared by treating 16a , 17a -cyclomethylene-6-formyl-3-methoxy-pregna-3, 5-dien-20-one with sodium borohydride in methanol and tetrahydrofuran, heating the product in acetic acid and then treating the product of this reaction with chromium trioxide and pyridine. Specifications 870,286, 884,544, 886,619 and 929,983 also are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 843,353.
