Abstract

1308152 Pyridines IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 6 July 1970 [7 July 1969] 34180/69 Heading C2C Pyridine or an alkyl pyridine is produced by contacting a piperidine which has two alkyl groups substituted on the same carbon atom with a hydrogenation catalyst in the presence of hydrogen. The preferred alkyl groups are methyl and ethyl. The reaction is preferably carried out at a temperature in the range 300- 1000‹ C. At lower temperatures in this range the production of alkyl pyridines is favoured and at higher temperature pyridine production is favoured. Suitable catalysts are, for example, ruthenium, iridium, palladium, osmium, rhoddium, platinum, copper chromite or nickel. Platinum and palladium catalysts are suitably supported, e.g. on alumina or charcoal. An example is given of the conversion of 3,3-dimethylpiperidine to mainly 3-methyl pyridine with some pyridine and lutidines.
