Abstract

The invention comprises N,N1-dimethyl-4,41-dimethyl - 4,41 - bipiperidyl and N,N1-dimethyl-3,31 -dimethyl-4,41-bipiperidyl. The invention also comprises a process for the production of an N,N1 - disubstituted - 4,41 - bipiperidyl which comprises hydrogenating an N,N1-disubstituted - tetrahydro - 4,41 - bipyridyl wherein the substituents on the nitrogen atom are connected to the nitrogen atom by a nonacyl carbon atom. Any suitable hydrogenation process may be employed and the process may be effected in a liquid solvent or diluent, suitably at 20 DEG to 200 DEG C. at atmospheric or super-atmospheric pressure. A catalyst may be present, e.g. a "platinum metal" (i.e. platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, osmium or iridium) or an oxide thereof and it may be used in finely divided form or supported on a carrier. The catalyst is generally employed in amounts of up to 5% of the weight of the material to be hydrogenated. The novel compounds of the invention may be prepared by the process claimed.
