Abstract
Pyridine homologues are dealkylated to produce pyridine and/or alkyl pyridines of lower molecular weight than the starting material by a process comprising passing an alkyl pyridine in the vapour phase together with hydrogen into contact with a hydrogenation catalyst at an elevated temperature. Preferably the catalysts contain no free metal, such as the molybdates and thiomolybdates of nickel, cobalt and copper are used. In the example a -picoline containing some 2.6-lutidine is treated with hydrogen at 450 DEG C. in the presence of cobalt molybdate to give pyridine with a small amount of 2.6-lutidine.
