Abstract

1,135,854. Pyridine. B.P. CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 19 July, 1967 [5 Aug., 1966], No. 35185/66. Heading C2C. Pyridine is produced by reacting formaldehyde, crotonaldehyde and ammonia in the vapour phase and at elevated temperature in the presence of a fluidized condensation catalyst. The process is preferably carried out at a temperature in the range 300-550‹ C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising silica, alumina or a mixture of these. If desired, the catalyst may also contain titania, zirconia, ceria or thoria and/or a modifier, e.g. an ammonium salt or the oxide or fluoride of zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, tungsten, nickel, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, iron, palladium or silver.
