Abstract

1,188,891. Picolines. BP CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 17 Jan., 1969 [27 Jan., 1968], No. 4378/68. Heading C2C. α-Picoline and #-picoline are produced by reacting acetaldehyde and ammonia in the vapour phase at elevated temperature over a fluidized catalyst which is alumina or silicaalumina with at least 5% by weight of a modifier which is one of the metals zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, tungsten. nickel, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, iron and copper or a compound thereof. The preferred modifiers are the fluorides and oxides of the specified metals especially cadmium fluoride, lead fluoride, cadmium oxide and zinc oxide. The reaction is preferably carried out at 300-550‹ C.
