Abstract

1,235,390. Pyridines. BP CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 17 Jan., 1969 [27 Jan., 1968], No. 61312/68. Divided out of 1,188,891. Heading C2C. Pyridine and #-picoline are prepared by the reaction of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and ammonia in the vapour phase at an elevated temperature in the presence of a fluidized catalyst and in the absence of added oxygen. Suitable catalysts are, for example, silicaalumina, silica-magnesia and silica-aluminamagnesia. The catalyst may be modified, e.g. by the addition of zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, tungsten, nickel, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, iron, copper, palladium or silver, or a salt thereof or an ammonium salt. The preferred modifiers are the oxides and fluorides of zinc, cadmium, tin and lead, hydrogen fluoride, ammonium fluoride and ammonium hydrogen fluoride.
