Abstract

Conjugated diolefins are obtained by oxidizing a mono-olefin in the vapour phase with molecular oxygen over a catalyst comprising a non-volatile acid (i.e. one which does not substantially vaporize or sublime at the reaction temperature) supported on activated alumina which has been heated to 700 DEG -1400 DEG C. prior to deposition of the acid. The olefin, e.g. a butene or isopentene, may form 1-21% by volume of the reaction mixture and oxygen also forms 1-21%. A diluent is added, preferably nitrogen, e.g. by using air as the source of oxygen, and/or steam. Reaction is effected at 300 DEG -600 DEG C. for 1-30 seconds at any pressure.
