Abstract
In the production of diolefins by reacting a mono-olefin having a chain of at least four carbon atoms in the vapour phase with oxygen over a catalyst, the reaction is effected in a plurality of stages with inter-stage cooling, excessive temperature rise being prevented by control of the amount of catalyst in each stage and/or the inlet temperature of each stage. Cooling is effected by cooling coils or by direct spraying with water. Butenes form butadiene and 2-methylbutene-2 forms isoprene in the presence of bismuth molybdate or phosphotungstate or tin antimonate which may be supported on silica. Steam, nitrogen, carbon dioxide or paraffins may be present as diluents. In an example a butene/air/steam mixture is preheated to 372 DEG C. and passed through three stages; the outlet temperature of the first is 422 DEG C. and the reactants are cooled to 339 DEG C., the outlet of the second is 426 DEG C. and gases are cooled to 318 DEG C. and the final temperature is 408 DEG C. Specification 902,952 is referred to.
