Abstract

943,941. Dehydrating paraffins. POLYMER CORPORATION Ltd. March 22, 1962 [April 6, 1961], No. 11024/62. Heading C5E. In the dehydrogenation of paraffins having at least 3 carbon atoms in the molecule in a cyclic process comprising alternately passing the hydrocarbon and steam over a calcium nickel phosphate catalyst at dehydrogenation temperature and regenerating the catalyst, there is added 5-40% by volume of oxygen based on the hydrocarbon during the dehydrogenation phase. Suitable conditions are 550- 700‹ C. with a volume ratio of steam to hydrocarbon of 2-20: 1 and contact times of 0.25-6 seconds generally using atmospheric pressure. Oxygen should be present as O, O2 or O3 and may be mixed with diluents, e.g. carbon dioxide, nitrogen, natural gas, or as air or may be formed in situ from hydrogen peroxide, nitrogen dioxide or organic peroxides or hydroperoxides. The catalyst may also contain chromium oxide. Butane forms butenes and butadiene, pentane forms pentene and pentadiene, isopentane forms isopentene and isoprene, hexane forms benzene.
