Abstract

The dehydrogenation of mono-olefins to diolefins and of alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons to unsaturated side chain products in the presence of steam over a calcium nickel phosphate catalyst is effected in the presence of 5-40% by volume, based on the hydrocarbon, of oxygen. The oxygen may be added as oxygen, air or a compound producing oxygen such as hydrogen peroxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur trioxide, benzoyl peroxide, cumene hydroperoxide or diisopropyl benzene hydroperoxide. The amount of steam added may be 10-50 volumes per volume of hydrocarbon and the reaction is effected at 550-650 DEG C., using contact times of 0.25 to 1 second. Oxygen may be mixed with the hydrocarbon before heating but should not be mixed undiluted with hot hydrocarbon; the oxygen is preferably premixed with the steam. The conversions of butene to butadiene, isopentene to isoprene and ethyl benzene to styrene are specified.
