Abstract

Disubstituted hydroquinones are prepared by dispersing and/or dissolving hydroquinone in sufficient 30%-80% aqueous sulphuric acid to provide a fluid reaction medium and introducing thereinto at least two molecular proportions, based on the hydroquinone, of an olefin or aryl substituted olefin or a diene hydrocarbon or of a substance which under the reaction conditions acts as a source thereof and, if necessary, heating the reaction mixture. Specified olefins are 2-methyl-/-or-2-butene, 2, 3, or 4-methyl-2 : 4-pentadiene, 2-methyl-or 2 : 3-dimethyl-1 : 3-butadiene, 1 : 3-butadiene, isobutylene, styrene and 2-methyl-3-pentene. Alcohols give olefins under the reaction conditions and tert.-butyl, tert.-amyl, tert.-hexyl and sec-butyl alcohols and isobutyl carbinol are specified. In examples the preparation of diamyl-, dibutyl- and diphenethylhydroquinones is described.
