Abstract

1290061 Dehydrogenation with sulphur oxides ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 7 Dec 1970 [19 Dec 1969] 57949/70 Addition to 1288784 Heading C5E [Also in Division C2] An organic compound having at least one grouping is dehydrogenated in the vapour phase at 800-1500‹ F. with a sulphur oxide in the presence of steam over a MgO catalyst of surface area 4-80 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. The sulphur oxide is preferably SO 2 in amount 0À1-1 moles per mole hydrogen to be abstracted. Examples describe the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene but other reactions listed are:-isopropylbenzone to α-methylstyrene; cyclohexane to benzene; vinylcyclohexane or vinylcyclohexene to styrene, butanes to butenes and butadiene; butene to butadiene; and methylbutane to isoprene.
