Abstract
Organic compounds are dehydrogenated by reacting in the vapour phase at a temperature above 371 degrees C in a reaction zone a dehydrogenatable organic compound, a sulphur-containing dehydrogenation activator and oxygen, the activator being selected from (I) sulphur compounds reacting with the organic compound to produce hydrogen sulphide and sulphur, (II) sulphur compounds reacting with oxygen to produce sulphur oxides or sulphur, and (III) mixtures of compounds (I) and (II). The process is useful for dehydrogenating C2-20 hydrocarbons, especially for dehydrogenating ethylbenzene to styrene. Coke formation is reduced. Increased yields of dehydrogenated product are obtained, and the catalyst has an extended active life.
