Abstract
The dehydrogenation of C2-C6 alkanes to olefins or diolefins is effected by preheating a stream of the hydrocarbon to 1100-1250 DEG F., suspending in the stream a dehydrogenation catalyst preheated to 1150-1250 DEG F. to form a dilute suspension, passing the suspension through a reaction zone for a contact time of 1.5-4.5 seconds at 1150-1250 DEG F. with an initial pressure of 9-15 p.s.i.a. and a final pressure of 2-5 p.s.i.a., separating the catalyst and quenching the vapour products. The catalyst density is preferably 0.3-3 lb./cu. ft. or 20-50 lb./lb. of hydrocarbon. The conversion of butane to butadiene is exemplified using a chromia-alumina catalyst. The conversion of alkanes to dienes may be effected in a 2-stage reactor.
