Abstract
Unsaturated hydrocarbons are obtained by subjecting a feed containing propylene and steam to temperatures of 900-1200 DEG C. for less than 0.01 second and shock cooling the effluent. The products include acetylene, ethylene, methylacetylene, allene, butadiene, and butenes. The feed may contain 34-93.4% mol. of steam and 6.6-66% mol. of propylene and is heated to 900-1200 DEG C. for 0.003-0.01 second at a total pressure of at least one atmosphere and a propylene partial pressure of 50-500 mm. Hg. Heating is effected by mixing with a hot gas, e.g. nitrogen or superheated steam, passing through an electric arc, partial combustion of the propylene feed or by mixing with heated solid particles, e.g. of carbon. Cooling, to 350 DEG C. or below, is effected with a cold water or oil spray, with cool gases or with powdered, inert solid, e.g. carbon.
