Abstract

Allene and methylacetylene are obtained by pyrolysing a mixture containing isobutylene and at least 40% mol of steam at above 1,000 DEG C. for 0.001-0.06 second and cooling rapidly. The heating is preferably effected by mixing the isobutylene, which may be preheated, with superheated steam at 2,000-2,500 DEG C. Alternatively a mixture of steam and isobutylene is heated by adding a hot gas, e.g. nitrogen, passing through an electric arc, burning a portion of the isobutylene or contacting with hot powdered particles, e.g. carbon. The total pressure may be 0.9-1.2 atmosphere and cooling, preferably to below 500 DEG C., is effected by shock cooling or with a cold liquid or gas. The products may be separated by distillation.
