Abstract
Cyclic polymers of e -caprolactam, such as a dimer, are converted into the monomer by contact in the vapour phase with a bed of inert material at elevated temperature (preferably at least 300 DEG C., e.g. 350-450 DEG C.), and the resulting vapours treated to recover the monomer. The preferred pressure is atmospheric. By "inert material" is meant a material which exerts substantially no chemical or catalytic action, its function being believed to be the rapid transfer of heat to the vaporized polymer; suitable inert materials are sand, silica chips, coke and ceramic materials. The vaporized polymer may contain monomer or be in the presence of a carrier gas. The monomer may be separated by condensing the vapours and extracting with a suitable solvent, such as water; unreacted polymer may be re-cycled.
