Abstract

Cyclic amides are prepared by heating a lactone in the vapour phase with ammonia, suitably at between 200-350 DEG C. The lactone vapour may be diluted with an inert gas and dehydrating catalysts may be present. In examples, ammonia and vaporized caprolactone, butyrolactone or valerolactone are passed over heated alumina or boron phosphate and the reacted vapours are condensed and then fractionated to recover the resulting caprolactam, a -pyrrolidone or a -piperidone.
