Abstract
921,229. Treating fibres; finishing yarns. COURTAULDS Ltd. Nov. 29, 1960 [Nov. 30, 1959], No. 40543/59. Class 120 (3). A tow spreading device comprises a channel through which a tow 1 of filaments or yarns in the form of a flat band may pass in the direction of the arrow and a chamber 4 tapering to a narrow slot 3a transverse to the path of the band, the chamber being so shaped as to direct fluid, e.g. air, under pressure from the chamber 4, through the slot 3a and on to the tow 1. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 the channel is formed between plates 2, 3. A semi-cylindrical groove 2a is formed in the plate 2 so that ejected air is passed back through the tow 1 and also has a slight tractive effect thereon. In a modification, Fig. 2, plates 12, 13 have slots 12a, 13a respectively each about <SP>1</SP>/ 60 inch wide and which are each connected to an air chamber 14 or 15. Air applies a tractive effect on the tow and may be used to move it or the device may be reversed to keep the tow under tension.
