A weighbeam has a load carrier associated with one end and auxiliary means associated therewith for obtaining an approximate measure of the weight of the load, means being provided for bringing the load carrier into operative association with said auxiliary means when the load carrier is not in operative association with the weighbeam. The pan 19 in which the load is placed depends from a shackle 15 which has an upper plane 16 and a lower plane 17. The lower plane 17 rests on a knife-edge 4 at the end of the weighbeam 1 and the upper plane 16 rests on a knife-edge 11 at the free end of a leaf spring 10 which, at that free end, just rests on a steel point 8 carried at the end of an auxiliary beam 5, the required condition being obtained by an adjusting screw 7. In operation, the auxiliary beam and spring, which are at right angles to the weighbeam 1, are raised by a cam 13 on a shaft 14, through a lift rod 12, until the shackle is picked up on the knife-edge 11. A cam 25 on the shaft 14 operates a micro switch 23 to cause a lamp to illuminate a graticule 22, which follows the movement of the beam 5, and an approximate indication of the weight is therefore given. Weights are accordingly set for the beam by weight-manipulating dials and the shaft 14 is turned in the reverse direction until the shackle is lowered on the knifeedge 4 and the beam 1 is released for action. The final weight may then be found from the settings of the weight-manipulating dials and the reading of a fine graticule, the illumination of which is brought into action by a microswitch 24.
