Abstract
232,888. Linsdell, J. M. Dec. 15, 1924. Spring balances.- A portable or pocket spring balance for weighing suspended articles is provided with a number of springs which may be selectively employed for the weighing operation. The load hook 12, Fig. 2, is connected by a square bar 3 and a shank 4 to a light spring 9. By turning the bar 3 and shank 4 through a right angle a cross pin 10 on the shank bridges a rectangular aperture 5 in a plate 6 attached to the stronger springs 7, and in this position all the springs are operative to resist the pull of the load. In the position shown, the cross pin 10 passes through the aperture 5, and the light spring 9 only is operative. A pointer on the base of the casing indicates the weight in co-operation with graduations on the bar 3. A notch is provided in the periphery of the base of the casing to allow the point of the load hook to be slipped over the base for convenience in carrying the pocket. In a modification, Fig. 5, the springs act in compression, the weaker spring a being arranged within a stronger spring c. The load on the hook 12 draws down an outer case e and also a rod b surmounted by a triangular head j. In one position, for weighing small loads, the triangular head passes through a triangular aperture i in a plate f arranged above the stronger spring, and only the weaker spring is then operative. For weighing heavier loads the outer casing is turned so that the triangular head j engages the plate f thus bringing both springs into action. The outer case e is pierced by an elongated U-shaped slot the vertical limbs of which are graduated to give readings of the light and heavy weights respectively.
