Abstract
595,191. Testing physical qualities of materials. NEWBOULD, B. L., and BRIDGE, J. F. Aug. 29, 1944, No. 16401. [Class 106 (ii)] Apparatus for testing hardness of the kind in which a plunger is driven into the test material by means of a falling weight, sliding on the plunger and arranged to strike a stop associated with the plunger, means being provided to indicate the penetration of the plunger, is characterised by the provision of a hand- or pedal-operated trip device for holding and releasing the weight. The plunger 1 is guided by bearings carried by a vertical post 5 supported by a base-plate 6 and handle 16. A cylindrical weight 8, which fits loosely round the plunger, may be lifted and released, by means of a eam 10 provided with a crank handle, to strike a vertical blow upon a collar 9 secured to the plunger. The top of the plunger is graduated so that the depth of penetration is indicated against an upper bearing 2 and a pin 15 co-operates with a second bearing 3 to prevent the weight from falling too far to be lifted by the cam. The plunger may have an abrasion-resistant point and may comprise a solid rod as shown or a tube into the ends of which are fitted solid rods. In the latter case, the shoulder at the junction of the upper solid rod with the tube serves as the collar 9.
