953,213. Dynamometers; indicating- apparatus. SAML. DENISON & SON Ltd. Dec.4, 1961 [Dec. 3, 1960], No. 41683/60. Headings G1J and G1W. The amount of deformation of a ring 4, under compressive or tensile loading, is indicated on a scale 12 by a pointer 11 the spindle 7 of which is frictionally rotated by a spring-urged finger 10 when the bosses 5 and 6 move relatively to each other as the ring deforms. The graticule 12 is mounted on a window 13 in an aperture 6a formed in the boss 6, the aperture forming a housing for an optical system 14 for projecting an image of the pointer and scale on a screen. The latter and/or the light source may be fixed to the ring or to some other fixed part of the apparatus. In a modification of the apparatus (Fig. 3) an adjustable cam 16 is provided whereby finger 10 may be lifted clear of spindle 7 for zero-setting of the pointer 11 for any desired amount of pre-stressing. A spring 17 and stop 18 are provided for "zeroing" the pointer during the disengagement of the spindle 7 from finger 10. In an alternative construction, the pointer 11 carries the graticule and this cooperates with a fixed reference mark on the window 13.
