Abstract

1385940 Testing hardness SKF COMPAGNIE D'APPLICATIONS MECANIQUES 18 Dec 1972 [21 Dec 1971] 58307/72 Heading G1S A Rockwell hardness testing machine, in which a pyramidal diamond-tipped penetrator 1 is impressed into a surface to be tested at first with a minor pre-load and then with a major load, comprises a beam 8 to which the penetrator, supported for vertical movement by a flexible blade 7 and by flexible blades 3, 4, fixed at 5 and 6 is attached between a cross-bladed fulcrum 9 of the beam and an adjustable weight 10 serving as the minor pre-load, the beam having at its end remote from the fulcrum a ring 11 to which a hook 12 carrying the major load is attachable. The penetrator point 2 is protected by a cap 38 flexibly mounted on a diaphragm 40 and an electrically driven cam 20 and follower 19 are operable firstly to allow the weight 10 to act on the penetrator 1 and then to lower a rod 13 supported by flexible blades 14, 15 to apply the major load to the beam, the major load comprising the weight of a plate 18 and, if desired, of additional weights 30, 31 which can be selectively lowered on to or raised from the plate by ties 32, 33 attached to a drum 34 operated by a control knob 35, see also Fig. 6 (not shown). In Fig. 7 (not shown) an alternative arrangement for operating the cords is illustrated. The operation of the machine can be automatically controlled and timed by an electrical circuit which energizes an electromagnet 21, after the surface under test has been relieved of the major load, to connect the penetrator to the feeler of a dial gauge 22 by which the impression formed in the surface can be measured. During load application the cam 20 operates a switch which stops the motor 29 and places in circuit a timer set by a further knob (37), Fig. 4 (not shown), provided to control and adjust the time during which the major load is applied. The starting cycle is initiated with the starting up of motor 29 by contacts made when the cap 38 is pushed up into abutment with the casing part 23.
