568,327. Testing hardness of materials. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY, Ltd., and ROWLANDS, T. May 27, 1943, No. 8460. [Class 106 (ii)] A machine for testing the hardness of a number of similar articles has a reciprocating penetrator and means for indicating the depth of penetration at each operative stroke. The penetrator 14 is mounted on a rod 13 reciprocated by a motor-driven cam 40 which oscillates a weight-loaded arm 28 about its pivot 37, the arm having rollers 24 engaging blocks 23, 29 on the rod 13. A sleeve 11 can slide relatively to the rod 13 and is normally pressed by a spring 19 into engagement with a collar 15 on the rod. The sleeve 11 has an adjustable cap 17 normally extending beyond the penetrator point. A dial indicator 33 is attached to the rod 13 and engages an adjustable bolt 35 carried by the sleeve 11. The penetrator and sleeve descend together until the cap 17. engages the work, the penetrator then moving alone and the spring 19 being compressed. The bolt 35 is initially adjusted so that the indicator reads zero when the penetrator point is level with the face of the cap 17. The indicator is illuminated by a lamp 56 and read by a periscope 57. Contacts 59 are opened to extinguish the lamp if the loading arm 28 approaches the lower limit of its movement. The descent of the arm may be prevented by a catch during the setting of work table 7. Audible or visual signalling means may be associated with the indicator.
