Abstract
919,816. Magnetic testing apparatus. SIGMA INSTRUMENT CO. Ltd. March 30, 1961 [Jan. 4, 1960], No. 274/60. Class 37. [Also in Group XIX] The thickness of a non-magnetic sheet 1 is measured by advancing a detector head 17 towards a magnet 3 by means of a micrometer 11, and noting the point at which a floating member 20 carrying an armature 19 moves away from a stop face 16 to which it is held by a biasing magnet 15. The micrometer readings with the magnet 3 against a non-magnetic beak 4 and with the sheet 1 interposed are subtracted to give the dimension of the sheet. The micrometer and head are mounted to slide on a shaft 5, and a collar 6 provides for its accurate forward location. The armature is mounted in a block of buoyant material and has an overall density identical with that of the liquid in which it is floating. The bias on the armature may alternatively be by spring or gravity, and the ready rearward displacement provided by the sliding sleeve 7 for re-check purposes, may be achieved by making spindle 13 of the micrometer slidable through the thimble 12.
