798,276. Machine-tool details. DECKEL, H., and DECKEL, F. W. Jan. 28, 1957 [March 16, 1956], No. 2961/57. Class 83 (3). A device for detecting radial and axial play, and thermal expansion in a machine-tool spindle 1, and also for use as a reference-point on a workpiece to be drilled, comprises a ball 15 in a holder 16 attachable to the machinetable 40 or a workpiece by one or more permanent-magnets 20. Play and expansion are indicated by variations in the reading of a dialgauge 12 operated by a lever 8 mounted on the spindle and traversed around the periphery of the ball by rotation of the spindle. The dialgauge may be of the sort described in Specification 746,093. A ceramic or glass ball 15 may be retained in the holder by pneumatic suction or, as shown, the ball may be made of steel and retained by a permanent-magnet 21. Soft-iron yokes 22, 23 and non-magnetic distance pieces 24, 25 are provided for the magnets.
