Abstract

836,116. Electric tests &c. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Jan. 4, 1957 [Oct. 6, 1955], No. 28515/57. Class 37. To detect clearance between relatively movable members such as turbine blading and casing a member carrying projections is mounted on one member and a pick-up coil 7 excited by a permanent magnet 6 on the other. As the projections pass the coil the reluctance of the magnetic circuit is reduced and a voltage induced in the coil whose amplitude is dependent on the spacing d. The indications of a meter 11 are made independent of speed by integrating the coil output with respect to time and the meter has a logarithmic scale. In a modification projections 2 are replaced by conical recesses formed by the end of a drill. Radial or axial clearance may be measured and the device may be used at the low-pressure end of a turbine with the capacitive device described in Specification 756,466, at the high-pressure end.
