Abstract
715,750. Photo-electric control of measuring instruments. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 27, 1952 [April 12, 1951], No. 8539/51. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XXXVIII] Acceleration, pressure, weight or force is measured by producing a corresponding torque on a coil C suspended in a magnetic field, movement of the coil effecting mechanically a differential response of an inductive, photo-electric or, as shown, a capacitative pick-off P1-P2-P3. The pick-off response is by means of a bridge circuit translated in known manner into an alternating voltage of corresponding magnitude and phase sense from which a magnified direct current of corresponding magnitude and sign is derived and fed to the coil C to produce a counterbalancing torque thereon. As the coil C does not move appreciably the D.C. is a measure of the acceleration &c. A dynamometer type of instrument may be used in lieu of the permanent magnet-moving coil type shown, one set of coils carrying a fixed current and the other set of coils the current measuring the acceleration. A magnetic amplifier may be used.
