[Also in Group XXXVI] In a probe for detecting metallic particles e.g. in the eye, coils 12, 14, 16 on a ferrite rod 10 are energized by A.C. from a source 22 the output resulting from detection being passed to a phasesensitive detector 24. The output operates a differential transistor amplifier 26 to cause one or other of two lamps 18, 20 to glow more brightly, a more accurate indication being given on meter 34. Before use, a cap 38 containing metal or ferrite is rotated until the brilliance of the lamps is equal.
