Abstract

An improvement, in a process for the manufacture of a dispersion having a solids content of up to 60% in which vinyl acetate is polymerized in emulsion with an ester of maleic acid in the presence of an emulsifier mixture of polyvinyl alcohol of saponification number between 0 to 200, a partially ethoxylated fatty alcohol of 14 to 18 carbon atoms, and a fatty acid sulphonate of 12 to 18 carbon atoms, comprises carrying out the process in the presence of 0,01 to 0,2% on the total weight of the dispersion of an acid salt of sulphurous acid or an addition compound thereof. Dibutyl maleate is the preferred ester and sodium bisulphite or its addition product with formaldehyde the preferred acid salt. A sequestering agent, e.g. acetic acid or a partial ester of phosphoric acid with coconut oil or carboxyethyl-cellulose may also be present.
