Abstract

A mixed ester of cellulose is made by reacting a partially p saponified ester of cellulose and a fatty acid having 2 to 4 carbon atoms in its molecule, e.g. cellulose acetate having an acetyl content not exceeding 40%, with maleic acid, maleic anhydride, monomethyl maleate or monoethyl maleate. A polyvinyl mixed ester is made by reacting polyvinyl alcohol or a partially saponified polyvinyl formate, acetate, propionate or butyrate, acetal of polyvinyl alcohol or copolymer of vinyl alcohol with vinyl acetate and/or vinyl acetal, with maleic acid, maleic anhydride, monomethyl maleate or monoethyl maleate. Specification 487,056, [Group IV (b)], and U.S.A. Specification 2,352,261 are referred to.ALSO:Gelatine is hardened by incorporating it with between 2 and 20% of its dry weight of the product obtained by reacting maleic acid, maleic anhydride, monomethyl maleate or monoethyl maleate with cellulose acetate, e.g. having an acetyl content not exceeding 40%, or with polyvinyl alcohol or with a partially saponified polyvinyl formate, acetate, propionate or butyrate acetal of polyvinyl alcohol or copolymer of vinyl alcohol with vinyl acetate and/or vinyl acetal.
