Abstract

A composition comprises a water-redispersible dry vinyl ester polymer emulsion powder containing interspersed therein a hydrophilic colloid and dry glyoxal. The polymer may be a powder prepared by a freeze- or spray-drying process, e.g. according to the process disclosed in Specification 753,173. The hydrophilic colloid may be polyvinyl alcohol, hydroxyethyl cellulose, dextrin, starch, gum tragacanth or gum arabic. The polymer may be a homopolymer of vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, hexoate, benzoate or stearate, or copolymers of these, e.g. with maleic and fumaric esters, other vinyl esters, vinyl halides, e.g. vinyl chloride or bromide, acrylic and methacrylic esters, or with acrylic, methacrylic or crotonic acids. The composition may be made by mixing the dry components together at room temperature. The compositions may be dispersed in water to form emulsions, and films may be cast from them, or they may be used as adhesives. Specifications 466,173 and 785,406 also are referred to.
