Abstract

A coating composition comprises a vehicle comprising a film-forming material dispersed or dissolved in an aqueous medium or a volatile solvent medium, such as white spirit or xylene, and, dispersed through said vehicle, fine particles of a spray-dried synthetic resin or cellulose derivative, the spray-dried material being neither soluble nor swellable to any appreciable extent in said medium. The spray-dried material may be dyed, preferably prior to spraying and preferably with a fluorescent dyestuff. The film-forming material may be cellulose nitrate or acetate, carboxymethyl cellulose, an alkyd resin, a drying oil modified alkyd resin, a styrenated alkyd resin, a urea- or melamine-formaldehyde resin, polyvinyl acetate, chloride or alcohol, polymethyl or polybutyl methacrylate, polymethyl acrylate, polyacrylonitrile, polystyrene, gelatine or a water-soluble alginate. The spray-dried material may be urea-formaldehyde, butylated urea- or melamine-formaldehyde, cellulose nitrate, acetate, acetobutyrate or acetopropionate, ethyl or benzyl cellulose, polyvinyl butyral, polyvinyl formal, or a homopolymer or copolymer of methyl or butyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate or chloride or vinylidene chloride.
